Jan 12,2026
On December 26, 2025, on the 132nd anniversary of Comrade Mao Zedong's birth, the Embassy of China in Burundi, in collaboration with the Burundian government, hosted the lighting and delivery ceremony of the "Mao Zedong Avenue" solar street light project in Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi.

The event was attended by more than 60 people, including representatives from Burundi's Ministry of Energy and Mines, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bujumbura Province, pro-China individuals from various sectors, and Chinese nationals and overseas Chinese in Burundi.

The “Mao Zedong Avenue” solar street light project was implemented and constructed by Sichuan Province and is one of the important outcomes of strengthened subnational cooperation between China and Burundi following Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye's visit to China in 2023.

In his remarks, Fang Guoqing, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Burundi, stated that “Mao Zedong Avenue” stands as a witness to the long-standing friendship between China and Burundi, and that the lighting of the avenue with solar street lights reflects the continuous deepening of pragmatic cooperation between the two countries in the new era.

The Permanent Secretary of Burundi's Ministry of Energy and Mines expressed gratitude to the Chinese side for its valuable assistance in improving infrastructure development in Bujumbura and promoting the development of clean energy in Burundi, and called on relevant departments to ensure proper maintenance of the project so as to maximize its social benefits.

The attendees highly praised the “Mao Zedong Avenue” solar street light project, noting that it connects with Prince Rwagasore Avenue, a tribute to Burundi's national hero. This symbolizes a cross-temporal “handshake” between the historical figures of both countries, implying a brighter future for the development of bilateral relations between China and Burundi.
